BC Day Weekend Hikes & Talk

Several programs are scheduled at the Wilderness Centre for the upcoming BC Day long weekend, starting with a hike to Divers Lake on Saturday August 3 with Heather & Rolf Kellerhals. This is an easy hike but there is a stream crossing so hiking poles and water footwear may be required. Swimming is also an option so bring a bathing suit! Meet at 9 a.m at the Wilderness Centre for this 4-5 hr hike.

On Sunday August 4 at 1 pm SWI is happy to feature Dr. Kathy Martin of the Centre for Applied Alpine Studies at UBC, presenting “Ptarmigan & Songbirds”. Strathcona Park is an Important Bird Area in part due to the unique Vancouver Island White-tailed Ptarmigan. Postdoctoral student Michelle Jackson will be working on the problems of climate change and alpine ptarmigan on Vancouver Island using the UBC citizen science ptarmigan observations. Pre-registration is not required for this talk but be aware that there is limited space for the indoor presentation.

For BC Day on Monday August 5, join a Nature Hike to Lake Helen Mackenzie. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Wilderness Centre for this easy 4 hour hike looking at plants & birds.

This weekend is typically the busiest one of the season at the Park – campsites are expected to fill up! All trails in the Plateau area are in good shape.
