Butterflies & Toads

Several hikers today reported quite a few Western Toads on the trails today! They can be identified by the white stripe down the back. Another hiker who had been fishing on the Plateau reported rainbow trout 16-18″ long in Mariwood Lake.

A special visitor at the Centre today was Mike Yip, expert bird photographer, who has lately been photographing Vancouver Island butterflies. He reported on his findings on the way up Mt Washington – different species are found at different elevations. Mike’s most recent reports & photos are here . He also writes a column for the North Islander newspaper. His work is always inspiring!
