The past few days have been memorable in Strathcona Park. Strathcona Wilderness Institute hosted a very successful Botany Nature Camp which included three hikes and six speakers over an intensive four days. The camp was very well-received & will most likely be repeated in some form next year.
A well-known local hiker has been missing near Castlecrag Mountain for several days and the search effort is still ongoing. CVGSAR is advising the public that they are operating out of the Raven Lodge area, adjacent to the Paradise Meadows trailhead. Visitors need to be cautioned to remain completely clear of the SAR staging area. There will be active helicopter operations and vehicle operations in progress – park visitors need to stay away from that location due to flying debris and rocks from the downwash, and away from the Incident Command area (yellow trailer and vehicles).
Parks Day is tomorrow, Saturday July 19, and activities at the Wilderness Centre at Paradise Meadows will be respectful of the search activities & adapt as required. Education & awareness will be the focus of the day’s activities at the Centre. There will be a moderate hike to Croteau Lake starting at 9 a.m, a nature walk around the boardwalk at 10 a.m. and another at 1 p.m; and several family-type activities between 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. For more information email coordinator(at)strathconapark(dot)org .
