An important principle in parks & wilderness areas is Leave No Trace : if you pack it in, pack it out! This was highlighted at the Wilderness Centre the other day, when our staffing volunteer found a bag of garbage left outside of the Centre (along with a jacket that will go into the lost & found).
This find is quite bizarre since there is a very large bear-proof metal garbage bin just a few steps away from the front door of the Centre. Almost all visitors pack out their garbage, so happily this is a rare occurrence. Even packing out others’ garbage is a big help to our Park environment.
It is extremely important to pack out all garbage or place it in a bear-proof bin. Otherwise it will attract all kinds of unwanted wildlife – even birds & mice can make a significant mess!
