The Coastal Fire Centre has just issued a ban on all fires in the coastal area including all of Vancouver Island & Strathcona Park:
“All open fires (campfires, Category 2 and Category 3) are prohibited within the area under the order, along with burn barrels, fireworks, sky lanterns, tiki torches. Stoves and other portable campfire apparatus are permitted, as long as they are CSA/ULC approved, and briquettes are also allowed.”
Andy Smith, Area Supervisor for Strathcona Area, adds “While there are no fires allowed in Strathcona Backcountry anyway, I wanted to keep you informed of the Regional Fire ban that was just imposed. This means that campfires won’t be allowed in any of our front country campgrounds either. While cooking stoves are still allowed, people should be advised to take special care with any open flames or cigarettes, etc.”
Strathcona Wilderness Institute programs are continuing: recent coverage at Tidechange, Comox Valley Record, Comox Valley Echo, and the Campbell River Courier-Islander. Shaw TV even came up to film a feature on SWI & the nature walks – look for the video soon on their YouTube channel.
